Compound Time

A knowledge of Compound Time is the single biggest new requirement for passing a Grade 3 Music Theory examination. This can be a tricky subject, but Sheila Joynes explains all about Compound Duple, Compound Triple and Compound Quadruple in her easy-to-grasp, fun way.

This is arguably the most important module in the Grade 3 series of programmes. Learn all about "Skipping Rhythms" and time signatures with dotted crotchet /dotted quarter note beats! Yes, really - it's quite a concept to get your brain around but Sheila guides you through the subject with her customary humour and ease.

As always, there is a downloadable PDF file to go with this video. Sheila gives the download address of this and the Module FAQ at the end of the programme.

Stuck at Grade 5?

Some music examination boards do not allow a pupil to progress beyond Grade 5 until they have passed Grade 5 Music Theory. Many music teachers do not teach Music Theory (or simply do not have time to fit Music Theory into instrumental lessons taught in school - Sheila herself has this problem) so this can become a barrier the student finds it difficult to pass.
